SMG, the world leader in arena and venue management, announced the appointment of Scott Cornwell as Regional Director of Operations for the company’s 17 facilities in the Southwest region. Additionally, Cyndee Pennington, General Manager for the SMG-managed Pensacola Bay Center announced the promotion of, Carly Johnston as Director of Marketing and Sales.
Cornwell, although originally from Miami, Florida, resonates more with Charlottesville, Virginia and has called Pensacola home for the last 3 years. In his new role, Cornwell will provide additional support to other SMG-managed venues with the ongoing evolution of operations, focusing on Maintenance, Safety and Security in the Southwest Region. Cornwell has been with SMG for 10 years and began his tenure at the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Virginia. “Scott has provided solid leadership to the Operations of this facility over the last three years. The additional corporate responsibilities will provide the experience he needs to further enhance his career in facility management. I am proud to have him as part of our senior management team” stated Pennington. Cornwell holds two degrees in Sports Management, one from Virginia Commonwealth University and Old Dominion University.
Originally from Pittsburgh, PA, Johnston landed in Pensacola via Washington D.C. in 2013 as Marketing Coordinator and has risen to her current position as Director in the two years. Johnston will directly oversee the marketing and sales department focusing on marketing, public relations, media buying, group sales, and sponsorships. “Carly has grown and proven her ability in her short time here and is well deserving of this new role. We’re excited to have her as part of our senior management team,” stated Pennington. Johnston is a 2011 graduate of Indiana University and holds a Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management and minor in Parks and Recreation Administration.
In addition, Chris Wegmann recently joined the SMG staff in late October. Wegmann is the new Sales Coordinator at the Bay Center, responsible for group sales and sponsorship efforts for the marketing and sales department. Wegmann previously worked with the NBA team, the New Orleans Pelicans as the group services associate. He began his career in marketing and events through interning with the Crescent City Classic, in New Orleans, Louisiana Originally from New Orleans, Wegmann earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Administration and minor in Finance from Louisiana State University in 2013.
